Shangazi Online began with a simple frustration: too many important books — the ones that explain how power actually works, how language is used to move crowds, how communities can hold leaders to account — were hard to find, harder to afford, and easy to pirate the moment they found an audience.
We set out to build something different — a platform where every copy is personal. Each book a reader buys is digitally watermarked with their name, so it feels less like a download and more like something made for them. That same idea protects authors too: personalised editions are far harder to copy and share illegitimately, which means more of the value reaches the person who wrote the book.
We're starting with a small, carefully chosen catalogue — books on politics, history, law, and the everyday realities of life in Kenya and across the region — with more titles, and more authors, joining as the platform grows.
Books that matter
We publish writing that helps people understand the world they live in — politics, society, law, and the everyday questions that shape African life — not just what's trending.
Fairness to authors
Writers deserve clear terms and a fair share of what their work earns. We aim to be the platform we'd want to publish on ourselves.
Respect for ownership
Personalised watermarking means every copy is traceable to its owner — protecting the people who write books and rewarding the people who buy them honestly.
Built for East Africa, open to all
Payment through M-Pesa and PayPal means a reader in Nairobi and a reader in the diaspora can both get the same book, the same way, in seconds.
